Foolishness of God

“Here I am, a woman of 90 now realizing that I am the foolishness of God, that this foolishness began in my Mother’s womb. She was not even aware that that little girl child had any special meaning; she thought that that little girl was not measuring up to her expectations. . .” (Gloria Bertrand)

“Why would God plant a precious element like a diamond under thousands of feet of rock?”

“Why would God allow Trench Town, an unforgotten ghetto community in Kingston, to give birth to Bob Marley, the greatest musician of the 20th century?”

“Why would God call a child born out of wedlock to become a witness to marriage?” (Bertrand)

“Why would God’s Son be born in a small and unpopular village called Bethlehem?”

Bertrand gives us the answer, “God’s ways are not our ways.”

We embark on a long journey to discover the wisdom in God’s foolishness. A journey on which we eventually discover the Treasure.  Perhaps we need to heed the wisdom of Joseph Campbell, “The cave that we fear to enter holds the treasure we seek.”

“They crossed many hills and valleys during this journey, sometimes they met fertile or arid land along the way, but always they were able to find food and drink, and discover new forms of life along the Journey.  Through them he gave signs of his presence which many around them saw but did not really comprehend, because they seemed so ordinary; but what he had planted long ago in the secret of the womb of woman, would grow and bear fruit, fruit that would last and produce seed for the sowing.” (Bertrand)

  1. Congratulations to Gloria Bertrand who is now an example of God’s foolishness. Thank you Fr. Don for sharing this.
