The Oil is on the Way

Oh! What a Beautiful Sunday.
It is Samuel’s Christening day.

Can’t remember when last we had such a celebration.
But a small group is at the church waiting in anticipation.

We watch, we wait and pray,
As we hear, the oil is on the way.

Don’t ask me on which road it is passing.
I can’t believe this is really happening.

One would think church has orders,
But you have to sit and ponder

Remembering things happen for a reason.
Never mind time, place or season.

The oil is on its way.
Trust me, it won’t be a long stay.

This year of Jubilee, we must live in hope.
The priest seems as if he can cope.

So, let’s relax and don’t bother,
the waiting won’t be forever.

The oil is around the corner.
I have faith in the driver.

I still have to pray.
I was just reminded the oil is on its way.

Don’t worry come what may,
Today is going to be a beautiful day.

The oil is on its way.
Trust me, it won’t be a long stay.

On Sunday, April 6, 2025, I travelled to Our Lady of Montserrat R.C. Church in Tortuga, Trinidad and Tobago, to celebrate the Sacrament of Infant Baptism for Kwesi Russell. The start was delayed by 45 minutes due to the absence of holy oil. Therefore, the sacristan arranged for holy oil to be brought from a mission station in Mayo. During the wait, the infant’s grandmother, Ann Marie Campbell, penned this poem about the situation.
